The Just Power Alliance launched in 2024, but our founding affiliate organizations have been doing this work for a very long time — a grand total of 171 years! We have decades of experience and proven track records in major urban areas in the East Coast, Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes regions. Our members represent 327 institutions and organize well over half a million people in the communities they serve.

All of our founding member organizations were affiliated with Metro-IAF, but we have chosen to pursue a new vision and build a new alliance

Each of our nine affiliates is a non-profit, nonpartisan (yet fiercely political), dues-paying organization that fights for social, racial and economic justice in their communities.

All of our member organizations are faith and community-based and they include schools, unions, churches, mosques, synagogues and small businesses.

The Just Power Alliance was incorporated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and our founding affiliate organizations are located in:

Over the past 28 years, we have helped people organize to build power, trained the next generation of leaders and tackled some of the most pressing problems in our communities.

In Milwaukee, we created a healthcare cooperative and won millions of dollars from banks to repair the damage of predatory lending in a local neighborhood.

In Cleveland, we are taking on the issues of pre-trial justice, juvenile justice, democracy and voting rights. In Ohio, we helped defeat a referendum that would’ve made it substantially harder for voter-led initiatives to amend the Ohio State Constitution to be proposed and approved.

In Connecticut, we have made an impact on issues as varied as gun violence, health insurance rates, police reform, immigrant rights and more.

In Boston and in Maryland, we are working with county leaders and local developers to secure affordable housing for seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and people with lower incomes.

In D.C., we are working on issues related to climate justice, safer communities and immigrant rights.

In Northern Virginia, we’re focused on building power to improve the lives of all in our community, including affordable housing and foreclosure prevention and restoration.

We’re taking on mental health and health equity issues. We fight for climate justice, safer communities, immigrant rights, democracy and voting rights. The issues we tackle come directly from the people in our communities, and our campaigns are led and won by the people who are directly affected. Our successes come from relational organizing, training, leadership and power development.

First, through relational meetings, one on ones and local strategy teams, we listen to the people in our communities. These community members who are directly impacted develop strategy and lead on the campaigns to make concrete change. We are strictly nonpartisan in the issue campaigns we choose.
